Spotlight Series: An Evening of Vocal Jazz
Chorale Midwest’s Vocal Jazz Ensemble will be joined by Cedar Rapids’ Kennedy High School’s Moonlight Express jazz choir for an evening of jazz standards on Saturday, May 6 at 7:30 p.m. at St. Ludmila Church, 211 21st Ave. SW in Cedar Rapids.
Under the guidance of Artistic Director Bradley T. Barrett, the Vocal Jazz Ensemble will perform a variety of classic and contemporary pieces including “A Nightingale Sang in Berkley Square” and “Sing, Sing, Sing.” They will also welcome Moonlight Express – led by Storm Ziegler, Kennedy’s director of choral activities – for additional jazz charts.
Tickets are $15 each for adults and $5 for students, and are available through Chorale Midwest’s website (choralemidwest.org) or at the door.
Founded in 1996, the Chorale Midwest is a premier volunteer chorus comprised of 80 auditioned singers from a variety of educational and musical backgrounds. The Chorale’s Vocal Jazz Ensemble – established in 2015 – is one of three smaller musical groups established by the Chorale in pursuit of its vision to to providing cultural enrichment, educational inspiration and community recognition through choral arts. All ensembles are led by Barrett, who has served as the Chorale’s artistic director since 2003.
Moonlight Express, one of 12 choirs at John F. Kennedy High School, has earned numerous outstanding ratings at Iowa State Jazz Choir Contest and other private contests throughout the Midwest.
